What are Men Thinking and What Women Want Us to Hear
It’s often projected in the media that for women to understand men is the key to finding and keeping a partner. Whether you are a man from Mars or women trying to think like a man, looking at the current relationship landscape, do these abstractions really lead to meaningful connections?
The subtext of this line of thought is often that women must cater to or adapt to the way men behave or think, becoming objects in need of fixing in the service of men. But really, do men have any more useful relationships strategies than women?
Although we tend focus is on the differences between the sexes, and there are many studies that support our differences. In reality, these differences are more from learned gender behavior and the legitimate physical differences between men and women are used to divide us. Both men and women can be aggressive, nurturing, romantic, emotional, and even commitment adverse.
Socialization has made women the relationship caretakers. The social codes of conduct for men present them as in control and emotionally distant. As long as we hold onto these conditioned beliefs, we will not hear what the other has to say and continue to live within our illusions. So, is there really a battle of the sexes, where woman are from Venus and have to think like a men? Or is the battle within ourselves, and cultivating the ability to see our humanity which transcends gender roles and unites us all?
