Myla - FLOW Poetess In Residence-Let The Man Speak!
(Inhale deeply)
(Exhale deeply)
(Inhale deeply)
(Exhale deeply)
As I lay there breathing by the rhythm of his breath
The inside lining to the curve of his “S”
I reminisce on what has brought us here to
This time
This space
This juncture
A place where we are so much one
It is hard to tell where my heart ends and his blood flow begins.
Our relationship began like so many others past
The difference was I thought this one could not last
Cultural mix-ups
Closed-mindedness at its peak
Until one day I decided to let the man speak.
Listening out for words
That only twice he would say
Words like I’m sorry
I was wrong
I should have done it your way
Listening to the words unspoken
Call it tongue lapse
Although clearly voiced
Carried out through many acts
Showing honor for the relationship
By letting go of past loves
Allowing room for my own mistakes
Helping him to rise above
Above expectations of disappointment
A cheating mate—a woman whom one cannot trust
One whose fiber of faithfulness ties intricately with lust
Listening for the I Love You’s
You’re Beautiful
I’m Glad You’re Mine
Ignoring the voice within which says
You might be wasting your time
Then one day I stopped stretching my ear outward
And turned my focus within
To the life I was meant to lead
Purpose designed at my beginning
I began listening to the sound
Of my heart beating
So softly, nearly a din
Reminding me that love of one’s heart
Is God’s near-perfect gift.
As women we tend to believe
That what is good is good for me
Which is equivalent to believing we
Can all fit into a size three
Specially designed
Created marvelously
If He has taken the time to create us
Shouldn’t we carefully select our mate to be?
Listen more
Speak less
Choosing our words so carefully
Because a man will tell you if he’s right for you—
If only we’d let him speak.
And while we wait for that special love
Who God’s purposed for thee
Idleness won’t do
We must live purposefully
So when you meet that special mate
You can wait gracefully for your ring
Not to be given lightly
Or shared with careless frivolity
The fullness of a heart is purposed for the mate God intends for thee
Knowing you can’t rush destiny
You cannot unchange what is meant to be
Nor can you control the reciprocity
But you must handle your own business, pray and listen
while you are waiting to hear The Man speak.

"That what is good is good for me." These words of Myla encapsulate the delimna of too many relationships. Are relationships just about feeling good? In my opinion, it's not about a good feeling or even longivity, but mutual personal growth. And that type of growth does not always feel good, but it can enhance your sense of self and enables you to not rely on your relationships to provide self validation.
